Sa Digma ng Halimaw: The Bigger Picture of the War on Drugs

The SIKAD or Sining Kadamay, an artists’ organization for urban poor rights and welfare, will be conducting a fundraising performance “Sa Digma ng Halimaw,” a documentary theater production about the war on drugs, as told by loved ones of the victims of Extra-Judicial Killings (EJK) under the said war and others affected by it. It is a series of monologues that use interview transcripts, news articles, incident reports, photos and video footage and other relevant documents to bring the featured stories in public performance.

This will be on November 22-23, 2018, 7pm onwards at Pardec A, CHR, Diliman. Quezon City.

PRODUCTION BRIEF

“Sa Digma ng Halimaw” is a series of monologues that use interview transcripts, news articles, incident reports, photos and video footage and other relevant documents to bring the featured stories in public performance.

The production is a mobile theatre project that will travel to different communities, schools and churches, and will be performed in open and public places. The performance will take various versions of staging: one, as stand-alone monologues; or two, as two monologues in one performance; and three, number of monologues woven into a full-length play.
All performances will have an actor-audience dialogue at the end to generate discourse and understanding on various issues attending the drug war.

Also, one main highlight of the production is that some of the actual interviewees will be part of the staging.

In structuring the stories, we asked ourselves, do we, as an audience of mainstream/social media, really know that side of the story from the victims’ families and friends? Do we really see and understand the turmoil going on in the hearts and minds of the victim’s kin? Of the havoc these killings have inflicted in one household? How does one become a monster and directly participate in the brutal annihilation of those who have long been marginalized by the system? Or cheer on these killings, brag one’s thirst for blood on Facebook and taunt human rights defenders? How do we seek out the truth, or that “other truth”, apart from the fake news or prejudiced reporting in mainstream/social media?

In ‘Sa Digma’, stories of family members whose kin were killed in the drug war will take center stage:

What happened to their loved ones during that dark hour of their killing, who were the perpetrators, how they survive the aftermath, and how they are and their loved ones were as human beings – as families, as friends, as neighbors. And ultimately, how this war has changed their lives forever.
‘Sa Digma’ will also tell the stories of the other important faces involved in this crisis: human rights workers, church people, photojournalists, alleged drug addicts, and operatives in the locality. Sa Digma will try to tell the bigger picture from real-life narratives.

The play will be staged in the communities of Sitio San Roque, Brgy. Bagong Pag-asa, Bagong Silangan and Payatas in Quezon City; Brgy. North Bay Boulevard North in Navotas City; Bagong Silang in Caloocan City; in Montalban, Rizal and in Pandi and San Jose del Monte in Bulacan. There are also plans to stage the show in Universities in Metro Manila.
