There is impunity happening in the Philippines. In a report of the United Nation Office of High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR) issued on June 4, 2020, they confirmed the widespread and systematic killings and arbitrary detention in the context of the war on drugs, killings and abuses targeting farmers and indigenous peoples, the silencing of independent media, critics and the opposition under the Duterte government.
Based on the recent report of Global Witness, the Philippines remain the most dangerous place in Asia for environmental defenders. In the monitoring of national environmental federation Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment, there are at least 115 environmental defenders killed under the Duterte administration. This trend is expected to worsen as the government implements the Anti-Terror Law which stipulates that any individual or organization who is suspected to have an intention to commit terrorism can be arrested without a warrant and detained for almost a month without a legal case filed.
